This wonderful concoction is my 2nd choice for ear pain with the first choice being breastmilk, if available. Third choice is collidal silver. According this PubMed article, prescription antibiotics have no early effect on pain, a slight effect on pain in the days following and only a modest effect on the number of children with tympanic perforations, contralateral otitis episodes and abnormal tympanometry findings at two to four weeks and at six to eight weeks compared with placebo in children with acute otitis media. According to this 2019 study (also in PubMed), both allicin and s-allyl cysteine showed antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms, even at low concentrations. The tested microorganisms were: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, Candida albicans, and Candida tropicalis. This 2016 PubMed study concludes that while bacterial otopathogens colonize the nasopharynx from early age, symptomatic viral URI is needed to initiate the development of acute otitis media. Did you catch that? Acute, symptomatic otitis media is viral. Are antibiotics effective on viral infections? According to Aviva Romm, D, many cases of otitis media don’t need antibiotics as “approximately 80% of kids with acute otitis media (ear infection) get better without antibiotics in 2-7 days.”
Speaking of otitis media, have you read my BLOG on diagnostic equipment that every mom should have?
