How to make 1 gallon of hummingbird food

Making it is super simple. If you don’t have some of the items, I’ve added Amazon affiliate links where you can buy them but you should be able to find most of these items locally if you don’t already have them. Ingredients:

sugar (buy locally),
spring water (buy locally or if you are lucky enough to live near an Artesian spring like we do, we recycle water jugs by reusing them)
water jug to store the bird food

Instructions:

Add some water from your 16 cups of water to your medium sized sauce pan and bring the water to a gentle boil
Add 4 cups of granulated cane sugar to your medium sized sauce pan and stir until it dissolves
Cool
Pour into a water jug for storage with the remaining water & shake.
Store in the fridge - clean your hummingbird feeders and replace the food every 3 days or so.

Disclaimer

Boiling the mixture for more than 2 minutes will make a syrup that will attract other pollinators that will interfere with the hummers' feeding. Food coloring is not healthy for the birds. Artificial sweeteners and honey are deadly to hummers. Clean your feeders regularly and repace food with fresh food. The warmer it is, the more often you should clean your feeders and replace the food. When it is 85-88 F, change it every 3 days and 93F+, change it daily.
